The program is organized in terms of modules and workshops that should cover 200 hours. It includes tree modules of 30 hours each (Research Methodology; Entrepreneurship; University Pedagogy) besides workshops on different issues related to research depending on the student’s registration date (How to write a research proposal (1st year); How to write a conference abstract; How to write a paper; How to write the literature review chapter, How to collect data; How to design a questionnaire/interview guide/Focus group/free & participant observation; how to undertake the data collection; How to do quantitative /qualitative Data analysis, etc…); The Doctoral Centre requires that students publish a minimum of two articles; participate national & international conferences, attend theses defences and get involved with their supervisors in the teaching process. Upon the recommendation of the supervisor, the doctoral student can also get involved in teaching a course or two in the department; The dissertation should be completed in a minimum of three years which can be extended to a fourth, fifth and sixth year under the recommendation of the supervisor and validation of the Dean.
The Doctoral Program « Contemporary Islamic Thought and social issues and the environment in the Mediterranean world» aims to prepare well-trained and highly qualified researchers and leaders and experts in the domains of Islamic thought. The main objectives are to develop a critical understanding of Islam and relate it to the social and environmental issues; understand the complex dynamics that underline human society within and across the partner countries involved in the project ; enable doctoral students to engage with research within the norms of ethics and academic rigor ; develop the critical and methodological tools necessary for the investigation of Islam in contemporary societies; contribute to the training of future African academics and researchers in the areas of religious studies; With the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility added to it, the doctoral program will be strengthened and enriched further in quality and relevance with the presence of students from other African countries.

The Doctoral Program “Contemporary Islamic Thought and social issues and the environment in the Mediterranean world” at UM5 follow a national procedure and is regulated by a handbook for the national standards (Cahier des norms pédagogiques). The doctoral program is organized in terms of seminars. Students working on religious studies and Islam in Morocco or even in other foreign countries will address issues related to the national, regional as well as international community. The themes and axes of research offered for research are: Koran & Sunna and Contemporary Social Issues; Ijtihad and Contemporary Issues in Modern Societies; Islamic Thought and Contemporary Societies; Scientific Studies and Modern Authentic Islamic Studies;
The Doctoral Program offers three main modules, of 30 hours each to students from all the doctoral programs in the institution, namely “Research methodology” in first year, “Entrepreneurship” in second year and “University Pedagogy” in thirst year. Besides, doctoral students have to attend seminars, study days, workshops and conferences organized by the doctoral centre and the doctoral program. They also have to attend doctoral defences and publish a minimum of two articles before they can defend their dissertation and achieve their graduation. Doctoral students are also required to do class observations and get involved in teaching under the supervision of their supervisors. With the research in progress, students are expected to make status reports each academic year to keep them on the right track. The doctoral programs are subject to review every four to five years.
Students are assessed on the basis of their progress report, their involvement in the activities organized by the Doctoral Centre and the Doctoral Program they belong to, the conferences they have attended (e.g. national/international conferences), the papers they have published. Finally, after the completion of the doctorate, the student can submit the dissertation only with the permission of the supervisor. He has also to submit a scientific file including statements justifying all the scientific activities he has attended, the articles he has published, etc. The Dean is the highest authority to validate the members of the jury proposed by the supervisor in consultation with the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program. The defence can take place only after it has been publically announced at least three weeks earlier. The defence is open to the public with external examiners always coming from other national institutions or international institutions in the case of co-supervision. These are rated “Honourable” or “Very Honourable”.

Among the outcomes, the program aims to provide doctoral students from the partner universities with high quality training schemes in the areas of religious studies in general and Islamic religion in particular. The program will prepare a new generation of Moroccan African university graduates and researchers in the areas of religious studies. A large number of the Doctoral students are primarily employees (high school teaching staff), public or private institutions. The number of full time students is very limited and students may get a job during the process of completing their dissertation. At completion of Doctoral Program, candidates are expected to have acquired the desired expertise in their field, become assistant professor in the national universities when positions are available. Those who already have a position in the public institutions can apply for a position at the university depending on the positions the Ministry of Higher Education can offer.

All Doctoral programs are prepared by the research groups/laboratories according to a pattern developed by the Ministry of Higher Education. After curricula developments, the program is first assessed by the senior professors in the field who are members of the academic commissions of the University Council. The final validation is provided by the commission of experts of the Ministry of Higher Education, which declares the program as accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Morocco.
Period of validity of accreditation:
The validity of the Doctoral Curricula prevails until the next program review period which is usually done between 4 to 5 years.
