It is an advanced training program aiming at enhancing scientific research competences and skills. It was designed to respond to challenges of social development in Mozambique by deepening the theoretical debate on development and society, conceiving and experimenting appropriate methods towards the production of new knowledge.

It is a four years program, consisting of two parts: coursework, and preparation two publishable articles and thesis. The coursework takes the first year (two semesters) covering 5 courses (Advanced Research Methods for Social Sciences, Management of Interpersonal Conflicts, Fundamentals of Ethics and Professional Deontology, Preparatory Thesis Workshops, Scientific Writing Technics. The total program will correspond to 180 credits. All students graduate after the completion and defence of a dissertation. Research undertaken within the program centres around 3 research topics: State, Civil Society and Public Policy; Health, Family, and Social Identities, and Territory and Society: Urban and Rural Contexts, and Population Mobility. Assessment is done through long essays, papers, classroom presentations, class assignments, written or oral exam and public defence of the thesis.

The graduate is able to: a) manage theories, concepts, methodologies and working principles of work; b) undertake scientific research, and assume leadership positions of research teams; c) teach in high education institutions, d) perform consultancy jobs and advisory roles in state, public, private institutions, including NGOs; and e) be ethically committed, rigorous, respectful professional.

The overall objective of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility programme is to promote sustainable development and ultimately contribute to poverty reduction by increasing the availability of trained and qualified high-level professional manpower in Africa.
