Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme

Academic Mobility for African Sustainable Development/AMAS

Staff Selection Criteria- Draft

As I could not retrieve the previous criteria for academic staff mobility, I write them again here. But I suggest all comment on them and modify them.

An academic staff who travels from one university to another to teach a course must basically know the course well and must have some experience in it as teacher and researcher in the field. That is the overriding understanding I cherish. This is particularly so for teachers of PhD courses. I think open it also for Master Lecturers.

  • In the call documents, we are supposed to put both Academic and Administrative Staff on this mobility- which Administrative staff are you thinking about? To me these should be those administrating delivery of academic programmes for example heads/chairs of Departments and Deans. Look at the call and you see that we have very few mobilities for staff, translating to only 3 for each PU overall (hope I am right).
  • I attach a document I have developed as Important Information for Applicants- feel free to adopt it to suit staff criteria

Requirement for PhD course teacher- I prefer term Lecturer:

  1. Submission of updated CV
  2. At least three years of teaching the same course (assuming that a course is given only once a year as is the case at Addis Ababa University) (Le’s make it TWO years!)
  3. At least three publications in the same field
  4. Strong recommendation from Head/Chair of Department, Dean or DVC Academic Affairs. his/her department or dean
  5. Peer assessment results of the academic staff on his/her academic performance (this is an exercise done at Addis Ababa university on academic staff at the end of each academic year.)- we don’t have this at Moi/(We don’t have in M5U either).
  6. Assessment results by students who took the course indicating teaching effectiveness to be good and above (No such practice in Morocco)
  7. Minuted recommendation of the AMAS coordinating committee from his/her home institution
  8. Commitment of the academic staff taking this assignment to stay in the partner institute for the duration of time the course requires
  9. Experience of supervising and examining PhD candidates (I think this Lecturer may do some examination and supervision roles while at recipient station- for example thesis marking, oral defense and even supervision)

(S/He can also give lectures at the institution).

  1. A track record in research (I believe the visiting lecturer will engage in, guide or even assist in research)
